Renowned Fraudster Fred Ajudua Remanded in Prison

Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, has ruled that alleged fraudster, Fred Ajudua, be remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Prison until the conclusion of his trial.

Mr. Ajudua had filed a bail application urging the court to restore his earlier bail or grant him a fresh one.

The defendant had been granted bail in 2005, but it was revoked two years later and failed to appear for trial until 2013.

Justice Oyewole on Thursday said that he was not convinced Mr. Ajudua would not jump bail again if granted.

“I am not persuaded that the applicant will present himself if the previous bail is restored or if he gets a fresh one,” said Justice Oyewole.

Mr. Ajudua had sought bail on the grounds that his kidney ailment requires frequent travels to India for “proper” medical check up.

At the last sitting on Monday, he provided a medical report and referral letter from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) signed by a Consultant Nephrologist.

The report stated that Mr. Ajudua underwent scan at the hospital last December.

Justice Oyewole held that the evidence provided before him was not enough to grant him bail.

According to the judge, “the report did not mention the size of the (kidney) stone, and since his remand in prison, there has been no report from the prison doctors regarding his ill health”. He added that "the applicant always reports before the court looking healthy”.

While directing the Superintendent of Prisons to ensure that Mr. Ajudua is taken to hospital whenever the need arises, the judge adjourned till July the 8th for continuation of trial.
